Intermediate Sewing Classes
Ready to start making your own clothes with a sewing pattern? Build your sewing and dressmaking skills with guidance as you create garments that fit your style.
Each course includes four two-hour classes. Some sewing steps may need additional time beyond your scheduled sessions. You don’t need a sewing machine at home; if you need more time to finish, ask about volunteering opportunities to arrange additional sewing time at the lounge.
This course is for students who can thread and use a sewing machine, follow seam allowances, and have completed at least two sewing projects. If you’re new to sewing, start with Beginner’s Sewing Classes, first.
What you’ll learn
Learn to read a sewing pattern, select your size, adjust the fit, lay out your fabric and pattern pieces, transfer pattern markings, and follow garment construction instructions. The techniques you practice will depend on your chosen project.
Choose from a variety of patterns for dresses, tops, pants, skirts, jumpers, rompers, vests, corsets, and unlined jackets.
Your path toward Advanced Sewing
I personally recommend taking at least three Intermediate Sewing courses; making pants, a top, and a skirt or dress across the courses. Working through these different garments helps you build confidence reading and following sewing patterns, or using the tools I’ll show you to sew a garment together, adjusting fit, and constructing your own clothes.
The goal is to feel confident sewing independently with a pattern and be ready for Advanced Sewing. Everyone progresses at their own pace, and additional Intermediate courses may be helpful.
Materials and tools
Donated fabrics are available for students to use, or you’re welcome to bring your own fabric for your project. We’ll help you choose a sewing pattern and suitable fabric.
Scissors, a tape measure, and use of the sewing machines are provided during class. If you register without the Essentials Sewing Tools Kit, please bring pins or purchase them in the shop.
The Essentials Sewing Tools Kit includes fabric shears, pinking shears, glass pins, a tape measure, seam ripper, hand-sewing needles, seam gauge, seam guide, thread, chalk, ruler, tracing wheel, tracing paper, and needle threader. Choose the $250 course option to include the kit, or the $200 option without it.
